This group is planned to run
over two terms from October 2025 to March 2026, beginning on 14th October 2025, with fortnightly meetings.
Its aim will be to
explore these two writers, focusing not on major works such as War
and Peace and Crime
and Punishment but
on a selection of their short stories. These to include such minor
masterpieces as Dostoevsky’s ‘White Nights’ and ‘The Dream of
a Ridiculous Man’ and Tolstoy’s ‘After the Ball’ and ‘Master
and Man’.
The
discussion will be within the wider literary, cultural and political
context of 19th century Russia. All the stories are available in
English translation, and no knowledge of Russian will be required.
Further
details of the programme and recommended translations to follow.
