Annual Residential Trips for members of Lewes u3a Geology
9-13 September 2025 - Field Trip to FSC Dale Fort, Pembrokeshire
Fossil hunting at Stackpole Quay
23-27 September 2024 - Field Trip to FSC Slapton Ley, South Devon
Tor Bay
We visited the Slapton Ley Field Centre, a stone’s throw from the Start Bay coast of South Devon. It is surrounded by the 210-hectare Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve that includes the 4km long Slapton Sands beach. The Centre is located within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty close to Dartmoor National Park and within easy reach of the M5 and mainline train station at Totnes. It is located within landscaped grounds with seating areas, shelters, kitchen garden and wildlife areas. Accommodation is set across four buildings sleeping up to 162 guests across 42 bedrooms.
We had a fully taught geology course, with daily outings to places of interest. Participants walked up to about 5 kms at a time, up tors and down to beaches, both hilly and rocky. Good walking boots, walking poles and waterproofs were needed. The Field Studies Centre provided full board and accommodation in double and triple en-suite rooms, with some in single occupancy. We also had the use of a class room, and all equipment and resources that were needed. Although the Centre is used mainly by school and university groups, the FSC has experience of u3a groups and will tailor the course to suit our needs.
4-8 September 2023 - Field Trip to FSC Preston Montford, Shropshire. See October 2023 Bulletin 38 for a full account of the trip.
