This class offers an opportunity for members to develop or refresh their knowledge of the Ancient Greek language and to explore the culture from which it arose.
Within a supportive group, the foundations of syntax and vocabulary are established, enabling students to engage with extracts from original texts by authors such as Homer, Herodotus and the tragedians. Students are invited to consider the historical context of these works and to discuss their significance for modern readers.
There is a further element to the class for those who wish to extend their skills through sustained reading and analysis of a chosen text.
The group spends some time every New Year preparing for the annual visit to watch the King’s College Greek play in London, familiarising themselves with the text in translation and reading excerpts in Greek.
Those who are interested in participating in the class, but have no previous experience of the language are invited to contact the Convener to discuss ways forward.
It is possible to attend the first two sessions of any term to help members to make an informed decision over joining the group.
No fee is charged for this group as the Convener has his own Zoom licence.
