Aspects
of Polish History
5
meetings to be held in the Yarrow Room, Lewes Town Hall 10.30-12.30,
on 11 January, 25 January, 8 February, 22 February and 8 March

Jan Matejko’s Battle of Grunwald where Poles and allies drove the
Teutonic Knights out of Poland in 1410
Most
British people are familiar with some aspect of Polish history, and
many will have Polish friends. However, like most countries in
Central Europe, Poland has had a chequered history, with borders that
have expanded or shrunk, with Russia to its east and Germany to the
west. It would be impossible to give the comprehensive history of
such a country in five meetings, but a group of presenters have
worked out a framework which will include a brief outline of its
history up to 1918; the period 1918-1989; an account of its “golden
age” in the 18th
century; its story in WW2, including a personal story relating to this period; a look at its main cities; its post-Soviet
development; and its art and culture. We will of course welcome input
from those attending the course.

Poland’s Solidarity movement helped drive the Soviets out of Poland
and Central-Eastern Europe
